When Google shows "device not reachable" and greys out the option, it means Google's servers tried to send a silent, secure push notification to your phone, but your phone failed to talk back to the server within the security window.
Here is why this happens and how to quickly fix it so you can log in.
1. Quick Fixes on Your Phone
Turn off Battery Saver / Power Saving Mode: This is the most common culprit. Power-saving modes aggressively freeze background synchronization and kill the notification listeners Google uses to send you the "Yes" prompt.
Wake up Google Services: * Android: Open the Google Play Store or Gmail app.
iPhone: Open the Google app or Smart Lock app.
Opening these apps forces your phone to establish a live, fresh connection with Google's servers.
Toggle Your Connection: If your phone is on a weak Wi-Fi network, switch over to cellular data (or vice versa). Sometimes local network firewalls or weak signals block the encrypted authentication data.
Turn off Data Saver: If you have background data restrictions turned on, your phone will actively block Google from receiving the login request.
2. Check Your Phone’s Date & Time
Security tokens rely entirely on time synchronization. If your phone's internal clock is even a minute off from Google's master clock, the connection will time out and report as unreachable.
Go to your phone's Settings > Date & Time.
Ensure "Set Automatically" or "Use network-provided time" is toggled ON.
3. How to Get Past the Screen Right Now
If your phone refuses to cooperate and you need to get into your account immediately, look at the sign-in box on your desktop:
Click on the "Try another way" or "More options" link at the bottom of the prompt.
If you have alternative methods set up, you can choose to receive an SMS Text Message code, use a Google Authenticator code, or enter one of your printable 8-digit Backup Codes.
Tip: If the button stays greyed out after trying the steps above, give your phone a quick restart. A reboot forces all stuck background network caches to clear out, which usually fixes the issue instantly.
